The 2010 Toyota Prius is redesigned with freshened styling, more power, higher EPA fuel-economy figures, and a host of newly standard and optional features. This gas/electric hybrid is a five-passenger, 4-door hatchback that teams a 4-cylinder engine with a battery-powered electric motor and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Toyota's hybrid system allows Prius to run on one or both of its power sources to balance acceleration and fuel economy. No plug-in charging is required. Five models are available, called I, II, III, IV, and V. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, curtain side airbags, and front side airbags. The V model has LED headlights, fog lights, and 17-inch alloy wheels vs the 15s on other models. Newly available features include an adjustable-height driver seat, heated front seats, telescopic steering column, and, later in the year, Toyota's Safety Connect assistance system. Also newly offered are some high-end features usually found only on vehicles sold by Toyota's Lexus division, including adaptive cruise control, Lane Keep Assist with lane-departure warning, and Intelligent Parking Assist that provides hands-free parallel parking. Other new options include a solar roof panel that can power a ventilating fan when the car is parked, and electric air conditioning that can be turned on for up to three minutes to cool down the interior before getting in.

The last Toyota Prius flipped the automotive world on its head, changing the purchasing priorities of American car buyers seemingly overnight. Attracted to its sky-high fuel economy, practical body style and green image, consumers came to the Prius for many new car searches (regardless of their actual motoring needs). What was once an automotive oddity relegated to hemp-wearing greenies, the Prius grew to become the country's 13th-best-selling vehicle in 2008. Now there is the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius. It's poised to keep the hybrid revolution going, but with key changes to make it more appealing to an even wider audience.
A quick look at the 2010 Prius will reveal a familiar shape, but it's a little sleeker and a tad (dare we say) sportier than its predecessor. Visually, it looks smaller, but it's an optical illusion that creates a more streamlined appearance. Indeed, the 2010 Prius is less than an inch longer and wider than last year's model. The interior is a different story, as headroom has been reduced by a fraction of an inch. This wouldn't seem to be a big deal, but in our testing we found that taller rear seat occupants had their hair grazing the roof, and that wasn't the case before.

Under the hood resides a revised version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. There's a larger and more powerful gasoline engine now, but instead of providing quicker off-the-line acceleration, it allows more effortless highway cruising. A smaller electric motor contributes less torque to the overall powertrain dance, but it improves efficiency. There are other mechanical changes, too, but the end result is a jump in fuel economy, from last year's EPA-estimated 48 mpg city/45 mpg highway to this year's 51/48 mpg.
Toyota has also addressed other previous Prius faults. A more rigid chassis and a revised electric-assist steering system help to improve steering feel and driver confidence -- the old Prius' steering had a disconnected, video-gamelike feel. While the Prius still isn't exactly fun to drive, its straight-line stability is a lot better now, and in general it feels more like a normal car.
The latest Prius might even seem like a small, ultra-efficient luxury sedan depending on how you equip it. Luxury-themed items like heated leather seats, a solar-powered sunroof (cools the interior when parked), a navigation system, radar-based adaptive cruise control (matches your speed to the car ahead), a pre-collision system (retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes if a crash is unavoidable) and a lane-departure warning system for inattentive drivers are all available. Also, the automated self-parking system you've seen in Lexus commercials makes its way onto the Prius' options sheet.

The Prius has been a huge success, and with such success comes added competition. The all-new Honda Insight looks similar to the Prius, has similar fuel efficiency and costs less, but it's smaller and less sophisticated. The Ford Fusion Hybrid's more traditional body style and more involving driving dynamics should appeal to those who want their hybrid to be a little more like a normal car. The Camry Hybrid is another possibility, as is the limited-availability Altima Hybrid. Regardless, when it comes to an ultra-practical, ultra-efficient automotive choice that, depending on equipment, can be anything from an economy car to a luxury car, the 2010 Toyota Prius cannot be beat.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2010 Toyota Prius is available in four trim levels that should appeal to an ancient Roman's sensibilities: Prius II, Prius III, Prius IV and Prius V. The Prius I will be released later at a lower base price. Standard equipment on Prius II includes 15-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, keyless ignition/entry, auto on/off headlights, cruise control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-telescoping steering column, a hybrid system display and a six-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The Prius III adds Bluetooth and an eight-speaker upgraded stereo with six-CD changer. The Prius IV has this equipment plus additional exterior locking buttons for keyless entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver lumbar adjustment and an auto-dimming mirror. The loaded-up Prius V comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglamps and LED headlamps with auto-leveling and washers.
The Navigation package available on all but the Prius II includes a voice-activated touchscreen navigation system with real-time traffic, a back-up camera, a four-disc CD changer (replacing the six-slot) and Bluetooth music streaming. The Solar Roof package can be added to the Navigation package and includes a sunroof with a solar-powered ventilation system that cools the car when it's parked. The Advanced Technology package when added to the Navigation package includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision alert system, a lane departure warning system and automated self parking.

Powertrains and Performance
The 2010 Toyota Prius is powered by Toyota's advanced gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine combines with a pair of electric motors (one for propulsion, the other an electrical systems generator) through a planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT). The result is a total system output of 134 horsepower. In track testing, we clocked the Prius going from zero to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds, which is roughly the same as the old car and a few ticks quicker than the Honda Insight. The most important number, however, is fuel economy. The EPA estimates the 2010 Prius will return 51 mpg city/48 highway and 50 mpg combined. That's the best fuel efficiency of any mass-market vehicle sold with an internal combustion engine.

Safety
Every 2010 Toyota Prius comes standard with antilock disc brakes (the old car had rear drums), stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Optional equipment includes a pre-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system. In brake testing, the Prius stopped from 60 mph in a short 118 feet, with less fade than the previous rear-drum-equipped car.
Interior Design and Special Features
The 2010 Prius features straightforward climate and audio controls that jut out toward the driver in a "floating console" that provides a storage area underneath. This is an improvement over the convoluted touchscreen controls of the old Prius. Unfortunately, the materials used in the 2010 version are a step down, with harder and cheaper plastics throughout. The corduroy-like texturing on the climate and audio controls seems nice at first, but after only a few days, finger oils cause circular dark spots on most buttons. Another issue is the off-center digital gauge setup that buries the speedometer and fuel meter amidst a sea of less vital information.
In terms of versatility, though, the Prius is still a champ. The hatchback body style provides more cargo capacity than a typical midsize sedan, while its backseat provides lots of space (although headroom is a bit less now). The rear also seems to have less legroom than before, but that's because the front seats thankfully have more legroom. As for the front seats, the addition of driver height adjustment is a benefit for both short and tall drivers. Sadly, the latter still have to contend with a steering wheel that's placed too far away -- there's a telescoping column now, but it doesn't come out nearly far enough.

Driving Impressions
The 2010 Toyota Prius retains its hyper-quiet cabin, made possible by its part-time electric motivation and plenty of sound-deadening materials. The ride is also quite comfortable, and for 2010, the Prius' structure is tauter, resulting in a less flimsy feel when the car is driven over road imperfections. Another pleasant improvement is the electric steering system, which feels more substantial and better connected to the front tires while still being user-friendly in parking lots.
In regard to its hybrid powertrain, new driving modes (EV, eco, power and normal) allow the driver to decide how the car's powertrain should be configured for the driving scenario at hand. Eco is decidedly sluggish, but certainly gets the best fuel economy. You'll want to select power for freeway on-ramps or driving in hilly environments. The EV mode locks out the gasoline engine, but only up to 25 mph with at least a half-charged battery pack.
Model Overview:
The 2010 Honda Civic lineup starts with the frugal Civic DX, then builds up to LX, EX, and EX-L models. Each of those models come with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, making 140-horspower and hooked up to either a 5-speed manual transmission or 5-speed automatic. Si models get, in addition to a range of performance upgrades, a 197-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed manual transmission. Hybrid models get a version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) mild-hybrid system, altogether producing110 horsepower.
Models with the standard engine or Si version are offered either as a 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe. The Coupe version gets a slightly racier image, thanks to a different, more aggressive roofline toward the back and a tilted-back look to the rear fascia. Coupes have a full-size back seat, though entry and exit is a little more difficult. Trunk space is about the same in the Sedan and Coupe-very ample with a low lift-over height in both cases.
Even in its base DX form, the front-wheel-drive Civic feels responsive and nimble, yet also refined and comfortable enough for long-distance cruising. Si models have a definite edgier feel that won't be to everyone's liking, but they're better-suited to everyday driving than some of the other 'pocket rockets'-provided you don't mind a manual transmission.

The Honda Civic Hybrid uses an Integrated Motor Assist hybrid systems that's simpler than the full hybrid systems in some rival vehicles yet achieves nearly as much of a gain in fuel economy-especially in highway driving. The Civic Hybrid is rated at 40 mpg city, 45 mpg highway.
The other very green Civic model, the Honda Civic GX, remains the only normal retail-sale natural-gas-powered vehicle for sale in the U.S. According to Honda, the GX is eligible for up to $4,000 in federal tax credits, and natural gas costs about 35 percent less than gasoline. The GX is rated at a gasoline-equivalent 24 mpg city, 36 mpg highway.
The base Civic DX doesn't come with a lot of luxury or convenience features (there's no air conditioning), but it does hit on most of the basics, including power windows and a folding rear seat to expand trunk space to accommodate long items. A DX-VP (Sedan only) adds more popular equipment, including air conditioning and a 160-watt CD/MP3 sound system with auxiliary jack. Next up, the LX, brings power locks, cruise control and a center console with armrest, with an LX-S Sedan bringing alloy wheels, a spoiler, a chrome exhaust tip and leather-wrapped steering wheel. The well-appointed EX Sedan and Coupe get a moonroof, split-folding back seat, steering-wheel audio controls and ambient lighting, while the EX-L adds leather upholstery, leather trim, and heated seats and mirrors. Top EX and EX-L Coupes exclusively get an upgraded speaker system, including a subwoofer.

An in-dash navigation system and XM Satellite Radio are optional only on the EX and EX-L. Honda says that it now includes more than 7 million points of interest; it also has voice-activation and integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling.
The Civic comes with plenty of occupant protection, including front side and side-curtain airbags, electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes.
Model Changes:
After getting a number of interior and exterior changes to help refresh its appearance, along with an expanded lineup of tech features in 2009, the Honda Civic returns unchanged for 2010.
Model Value:
With coupe and sedan body styles, available in basic, luxurious, or high-performance Si guise-plus green-focused Hybrid and natural-gas GX sedans-the Honda Civic is offered in a very wide range of models to suit the wants of small-car shoppers looking for anything from simple, cost-conscious transportation to full-featured touring. In its most basic form, the Honda Civic DX feels more sophisticated and refined than most vehicles in its price range, with perky engines, quick handling, and good ride comfort. The Civic is also one of the few small cars that offers-at the top of the range-leather upholstery and a full-featured in-dash navigation system. Meanwhile, green shoppers will be delighted that the Civic Hybrid stands as the second most fuel-efficient vehicle for 2010, looking at EPA combined fuel economy figures, while the natural gas Civic GX will quality for a $4,000 federal tax credit. Finally, the Civic's longstanding reputation for resale value and reliability remain among the best among small cars.

Maintenance is something most of us ignore, until our vehicle stops functioning, that is. And then we wonder what went wrong, where. Maintenance is one of the most serious aspects of ownership. It determines the longevity, performance and reliability of whichever vehicle you drive. Looking after your vehicle involves more than taking care of its external coat of paint and keeping it clean and shiny.
Maintenance means taking care of all the parts, even those that are inside the bonnet. These are the ones that directly concern the performance of your vehicle. Besides taking it to the service station at regular periods, it is a good idea to go through the owner's manual that will give a fair idea about its routine maintenance.
Checking the battery, keeping a check on the oils, changing the oils, checking the electrical system, are some of the absolutely unavoidable things to keep your vehicle in good shape. Keeping a log book in which you keep all the details regarding repair, maintenance, routine check-ups etc. will not only give you an accurate idea of what needs to be done when.
General Maintenance
Maintenance Tips
A well maintained vehicle speaks volumes about you as an owner. More importantly, it will not desert you when you need it most. Read on for tips on specifics.
Engine Oil :
To prevent engine deterioration, it is imperative that the engine maintains the amount of oil it is programmed to receive. Negligence in this aspect will lead to a deteriorating engine performance, resulting in falling mileage.
Fuses :
Most Indian cars are made with an integrated circuitry system that use fuses. Knowledge of the system would help when you are stranded due to a blown fuse.
Lights :
It is important for the lights to be properly focused, for your own and for the oncoming vehicle's safety. Travel on low beam so that it does not obstruct your view instead of helping you along.
Tyre Pressure :
The required amount of air pressure needs to be strictly maintained if your car is to get the right mileage and pick-up.
Water :
If your engine uses water for cooling, take care to ensure that it is regularly changed. Water can also be used for cleaning the windshield.
Preventive Maintenance
Airfilter
Preventive MaintenanceCheck it every month. Replace it when it becomes dirty or as part of a tune -up. It is easy to reach, right under the big metal 'lid', in a carbureted engine; or in a rectangular box at the forward end of the air in a duct hose assembly.
Battery
Extreme caution should be taken while handling a battery since it can produce explosive gases. It is advisable not to smoke, create a spark or light a match near a battery. Always wear protective glasses and gloves.
Belts
Inspect belts and hoses smoothly. Replace glazed, worn or frayed belts. Replace bulging, rotten or brittle hoses and tighten clamps. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too hard, it should be replaced.
Brake Fluid
Check the brake fluid monthly. First wipe dirt from the brake master cylinder reservoir lid. Pry off the retainer clip and remove the lid or unscrew the plastic lid, depending on which type your vehicle has. If you need fluid, add the improved type and check for possible leaks throughout the system. Do not overfill.
Engine Oil
Check the oil after every fill up. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean. Insert it fully and remove it again. If it is low, add oil. To maintain peak performance, the oil should be changed every 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Replace the oil filter with every oil change.
Exhaust
Look underneath for loose or broken exhaust clamps and supports. Check for holes in muffler or pipes. Replace the rusted or damaged parts. Have the emission checked at once per year for compliance with local laws.
Hoses
Inspect the hoses and belts monthly. If a hose looks bad, or feels too soft or too hard, it should be replaced.
Lights
Make sure that all your lights are clean and working, including the brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers. Keep spare bulbs and fuses in your vehicle.
Oil Filter
To maintain peak performance, change oil every 3 months or 3,000 kms whichever comes first. Replace oil filter with every oil change.
Power Steering Fluid
Check the power steering fluid level once per month. Check it by removing the reservoir dipstick. If the level is down, add fluid and inspect the pump and hoses for leaks.
Shock Absorbers
Look for signs of oil seepage on shock absorbers, test shock action by bouncing the car up and down. The car should stop bouncing when you step back. Worn or leaking shocks should be replaced. Always replace shock absorbers in pairs.
Tyres
Keep tyres inflated to recommended pressure. Check for cuts, bulges and excessive tread wear. Uneven wear indicates tyres are misaligned or out of balance.
Transmission Fluid
Check transmission fluid monthly with engine warm and running, and the parking brake on. Shift to drive, then to park. Remove dipstick, wipe dry, insert it and remove it again. Add the approved type fluid, if needed. Never overfill.
Washer Fluid
Keep the windshield washer fluid reservoir full. Use some of it to clean off the wiper blades.
Wiper Blades
Inspect the windscreen wiper blades whenever you clean your windshield. Do not wait until the rubber is worn or brittle to replace them. They should be replaced at least once per year, and more often if smearing occurs.
Car Maintenance
Acquiring a vehicle is a fairly easy task... the tough bit comes later.
You are already late, but never mind. With the car at your disposal, long bus queues are passe. Click Here To Purchase Books on AutoYou'll be there, not exactly on time, but yeah, almost. Then, calamity strikes...the vehicle refuses to move...grunts, groans, fumes, and stops. Why, oh why... Maybe because you forgot that it too needs to be looked after, maintained, 'regular servicing...'were those the words?
The best and most efficient method of knowing about your car and keeping track of it is through the owner's manual which provides complete information on how to go about it. You can inspect your car every time you enter it, or on a daily or weekly basis or at intervals specified in the manual.
In this section, we deal with those facts that are not mentioned in the manual.
A few while driving tips.
At times, strange smells may emanate from inside your car. The possible causes may be:
- Musty odours indicate the existence of some trapped water, usually under the carpet. This will ruin the carpet and also speed up corrosion. The proper solution would be to remove the carpets and dry up both the carpet and the floor.
- Smoky smells are of various kinds. Electrical smoky smells are the most dangerous and it is advisable to shut down, open the bonnet, disconnect the batteries and seek professional help. Other smoky smells may occur when the sound or heat proof lining inside the engine space burns. Trace the cause.
- Fuel smells occurs either when the fuel tank venting gets choked or if there has been an overflow.
- Sometimes, oil or exhaust smells from the engine occur. This maybe caused either due to too much engine oil, or if the engine oil has grown old and is burning, or if it has been overheated.
- A typical sweatish smell emanates when varnish is being burnt which occurs when your dynamo or alternator is about to pack up and would, usually be accompanied by flickering lights.
- Burning rubber smells tend to come when you drive with your brakes on. Overheated tyres may also be the cause.
Strange sounds tend to be sidelined in the bustle and din of our roads, and by the car stereo playing in the background. However, if the problem persists, the car will make its condition known every time you take a corner or ride over a bump. Some easily recognizable sounds are
- Strange clicking while taking a turn from the front wheels means that the front shaft is about to fall apart. Get it fixed before it actually does.
- A fan-belt squeal means that another one is needed.
- Rhythmic clicks from the wheel indicate faulty bearings at worst or just large pebbles stuck in the tread pattern at the best.
- A change in engine tone usually indicates engine overheating, especially if you have been driving at constant speeds for a long time. Stopping or varying the engine speed should be enough if there is no severe problem. Otherwise, let the car cool down and then check radiator and water levels.
- Backfiring while normal driving means serious problems and should be properly investigated. Promptly.
- Engine knocks means that it is time to get into a lower gear. If it persists, however, it is time to get your engine and engine oil checked.
Finally, you can avoid strange repair bills if you have been going in for regular check ups!
In this section, we deal with car parts that need regular care.

Make Your Engine Perform More Efficiently
Posted by Dante Sahasika | 11:02 PM | Technology | 0 komentar »ncrease displacement - More displacement means more power because you can burn more gas during each revolution of the engine. You can increase displacement by making the cylinders bigger or by adding more cylinders. 12 cylinders seems to be the practical limit.
Increase the compression ratio - Higher compression ratios produce more power, up to a point. The more you compress the air/fuel mixture, however, the more likely it is to spontaneously burst into flame (prior to the spark plug igniting it). Higher octane gasolines prevent this sort of early combustion. That is why high-performance cars generally need high octane gasoline - their engines are using higher compression ratios to get more power.
Stuff more into each cylinder - If you can cram more air (and therefore fuel) into a cylinder of a given size, you can get more power from the cylinder (in the same way that you would by increasing the size of the cylinder). Turbo chargers and super chargers pressurize the incoming air to effectively cram more air into a cylinder.
Cool the incoming air - Compressing air raises its temperature. You would like to have the coolest air possible in the cylinder because the hotter the air is the less it will expand when combustion takes place. Therefore many turbo charged and super charged cars have an intercooler. An intercooler is a special radiator through which the compressed air passes to cool it off before it enters the cylinder.
Let air come in more easily - As a piston moves down in the intake stroke, air resistance can rob power from the engine. Air resistance can be lessened dramatically by putting two intake valves in each cylinder. Some newer cars are also using polished intake manifolds to eliminate air resistance there. Bigger air filters can also improve air flow.
Let exhaust exit more easily - If air resistance makes it hard for exhaust to exit a cylinder, it robs the engine of power. Air resistance can be lessened by adding a second exhaust valve to each cylinder (a car with 2 intake and 2 exhaust values has 4 valves per cylinder, which improves performance - when you hear a car ad tell you the car has 4 cylinders and 16 valves, what the ad is saying is that the engine has four valves per cylinder). If the exhaust pipe is too small or the muffler has a lot of air resistance then this can cause back-pressure which has the same effect. High-performance exhaust systems use headers, big tail pipes and free-flowing mufflers to eliminate back-pressure in the exhaust system. When you hear that a car has "Dual Exhaust", the goal is to improve the flow of exhaust by having two exhaust pipes instead of one.
Make everything lighter - Lightweight parts help the engine perform better. Each time a piston changes direction it uses up energy to stop the travel in one direction and start it in another. The lighter the piston, the less energy it takes.
Inject the fuel - Fuel injection allows very precise metering of fuel to each cylinder. This improves performance and fuel economy.
The engine does the most amount of work in you r car. Its moving parts run at high speed and function at very high temperatures. For the protection of your engine, change your oil regularly, about every 5,000 km. Follow the manufacturers recommendations on oil and filter changes. Engine oil, transmission fluid and fuel are systems that need to be checked and replaced periodically.
One of the most important things that determine the performance and life of the engine is the lubricant or the engine oil. The oil level must be checked at regular intervals, at least once in every two weeks, and before a long trip. This can be done by opening the bonnet and pulling out the dipstick. The dipstick is calibrated and it will indicate the level of oil.
The dashboard of almost all cars have an engine oil light or some other indication. This comes on when the engine is low on oil and lubrication is not happening properly. Therefore, it is to be taken as warning light. Check the oil level immediately and if low, fill it. Do not drive on low engine oil. Normally, when you turn on the ignition, the oil pressure light should glow only for a moment and then go off. If it persists, it could be a serious matter and should be examined by a competent person. An engine not having proper oil pressure means that lubrication is not taking place and could result in the serious breakdown of the engine. They too should be checked or replaced.
Regularly check the tension of the fan belt and its condition from outside. It is important to keep in mind that it operates crucial engine accessories like the water pump, alternator etc.
Cooling System
The cooling system is important to protect the engine from overheating. The water coolant level should be checked at least once in a fortnight, and more frequently during the summers. The ratio of water to the coolant should be equal. Particular attention should be paid to the water level in the radiator when the engine is cold. Normally radiators have rated pressure caps. When the coolant reaches a very high temperature, it forces its way through a valve in the pressure cap. The overflow is then collected into the pressure coolant reservoir. When the engine oil is cool, the overflow is drawn back by the volume
