The Honda RA-X Concept from designer Xuacu PĂ©rez Quesada was developed as a credible vehicle that would be fit for production with currently available technology and systems. The concept was designed to mark Honda’s presence in motorsports, and hence carries the letters RA.


The exterior of the concept shows smooth, crossing lines that form a theoretical “X,” and the engine on the mid-engine sportscar remains visible through the glass covering. The rear shows prominent engine vents and LED tail-lamps arranged in a triangular shape. The design is dominated by steep ridges, but its smooth surfaces add dynamism to the model. The Venza offers a roomy, uncluttered interior, with the shift lever on the center console below the dashboard instead of between the front seats. This frees up the floor console to be used solely for storage, according to Toyota.

The driver and passenger sit higher than they would in a typical sedan, providing better visibility, while the rear has a lower cargo floor and split rear seats. In addition, the Venza comes with seven airbags, and it's the first Toyota car to come equipped with the Star Safety System, a stability control system found in Toyota's SUVs and in the Tundra pickup truck.

The Venza comes with a choice of two engines - an all-new, fuel-efficient 2.7-liter four-cylinder or a 268-horsepower V6, which gives the Venza a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The V6 links to a six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift.

Standard features for the 2009 Venza include remote keyless entry, dual-zone air conditioning, privacy glass, and 19-inch alloy wheels, which are upgraded to 20-inch wheels for the V6 trim. Options include a JBL sound system, a backup camera, and a power rear door.

Now, thanks to a joint venture with Swedish energy company Vattenfall, Volvo is ready to put a plug-in hybrid into production by 2012. And as a diesel-electric hybrid, Volvo’s new plug-in will pack a pairing of high efficiency technologies offering the potential for a major jump on the competition.

Specific details of the production plug-in hybrid have yet to be announced, but the demonstration vehicle currently undergoing testing should give a good indication, as Volvo says the technology will be similar. The test vehicle is based on the V70 wagon, with a front-drive diesel engine supplemented by an electric motor driving the rear wheels. An 11.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack has the capacity to drive the vehicle up to about 31 miles on a single charge.

Custom built for this test program by American battery maker Ener1, the battery takes four to six hours to charge when users plug in to a standard wall socket via a port just aft of the front wheel well. An additional charge port beneath the fuel cap is designed to interface with fast charging stations developed by Vattenfall, and will charge the battery in 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

A fleet of three such demonstration vehicles are being tested in Europe to allow gathering feedback about driving habits as well as real world charging needs. Under the terms of the joint venture, Volvo will manufacture the cars while Vattenfall will develop charging stations and supply the cars with electricity. Various charging concepts will be tested including high-speed home charging and stations in public places. WASHINGTON (AFP) As pilotless US drones do battle from the sky in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, a top US Army general is urging the military to step up the deployment of unmanned vehicles on the ground.

"It's all about saving lives," said Lieutenant General Rick Lynch, the commander of the III Armored Corps and the holder of a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

"There's got to be a sense of urgency," Lynch told delegates on Tuesday at an exhibition here featuring manufacturers from around the world of unmanned ground, maritime, air and space systems.

While serving in Iraq, Lynch said he lost a total of 153 soldiers under his command and "80 percent of those soldiers didn't have to die."

"I am so tired of going to demonstrations of technology," he said. "The technology is there. We've got to get past the demonstrations and into the field."

"If you're not fielding, you're failing," he said.

The US military makes extensive use of unmanned drones against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq both for surveillance and launching missile strikes.

But ground operations are mostly limited to the use of small camera-equipped robots to detect improvised explosive devices, or IEDs.

Lynch, who also commands Fort Hood, Texas, the largest US military base in the world, said aerial surveillance and weapons systems were useful but "the bad guys know that if the weather turns bad we can't see them from the air."

He said among the "immediate applications" for unmanned vehicles were route clearance, surveillance and in convoys.

"We're going to be fighting this war on terror for the next 10 years and the enemy's weapon of choice is the IED," he said. "It is today and it will be in the future."

Lynch said unmanned vehicles exist which are "excellent at clearing routes," which can go from point A to point B and even detect and avoid obstacles.

"Let's get those kids out of the vehicles," he said.

The general said unmanned vehicles should also be deployed to carry out what he called "persistent stare."

"The bad guys in Iraq and Afghanistan, they've got their favorite places where they want to place their IEDS," he said.

Lynch said the technology exists to use unmanned vehicles in convoys, as lead or trailing vehicles, for example, cutting down on the number of drivers and the risks.

"We're losing so many soldiers in convoys it's an embarrassment," he said. "Why does every vehicle have to be occupied by a human being?"

He said an unmanned vehicle could also be used as a "robotic wingman" -- a fighting platform which mirrors the actions of a manned vehicle.

Lynch invited participants in the exhibition, sponsored by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), to attend a September 1-3 "Robotics Rodeo" that he is holding at Fort Hood.

"Bring your systems to Fort Hood and allow the soldiers who just got back from combat to use them," he said. "They'll tell you 'This is going to work. I know that ain't going to work.'"
